I’d probably hate it for other reasons, but I’d be perfectly happy with the Arizona I saw earlier this year where lawns were sand or scrub and grass was kept to manicured areas.
Not sure when exactly you visited AZ but I can tell you that right now it’s the approximate temperature of Satan’s butthole. Unlike where you live however, it’s a dry heat. Not sure that matters much when the temp is approaching 110 though (around 43 for the Celsius folks in the room).
For me it’s more than I like well-clipped lawns, but I’m happy using parks and such. I don’t need one myself. We turned a bit of our back yard into planters so there’s even less grass to mow, and the back yard was only maybe 20’ square to begin with.
My AZ trip was back in January, and the heat was the big minus to AZ for me. Also a minus to the Southeast and parts of the west coast.
$Wife has put in a request that if I got an out-of-town job offer she’d ask for it to be within two hours of the ocean, so that sets some hard parameters. That also fits with my general desire to get back into diving, so I guess it’s just finding a job now.
San Diego is near the ocean. Just saying.
I think $Wife would love it there, actually. If I saw something pop up I’d definitely take a swing at it.
We’re trying to work out next year’s travel plans and Plan B is The West Coast, probably ending in SD. We won’t make you accompany us to the zoo. (Once you’ve met my wife, you’ll understand the Zoo is not optional.)
EVERYWHERE is within 2 hours of the ocean. You just have to adjust your speed relative to the distance.
I think we’re assuming legal driving speeds.
Well pfft, aren’t we Mr Nofunpants.
Oh, NOW you add parameters.
Yeah, I have an open search going on Zillow and my realtor is monitoring the market too. I just have a very small window of time to buy and move next year what with the kids and school. Some of the houses I really liked on the market this summer are off the market. Not sold, just off market. But since I saved them the program will tell me when/if they come back on the market. I know exactly what I want and I’ll be ready to jump next spring. My current house will sell in a heartbeat - not to sound full of myself but it’s in the perfect spot for families in pretty much the most desirable district in Central Ohio. And because of where it is, it will never be redistricted away from the most popular high school in this district.
But I’m ready for land, and my boys need a smaller less ritzy school - they just don’t fit here.
Well, my week is over. The garage is totally cleaned out, and I’ve sold my snowblower and wheelbarrow. Neither get used so out they go. I have someone interested in my couch too so that would be nice. Next up is the downstairs bathroom. I’m hoping it’s an easy quick little project but I’m not getting my hopes up. Two weeks is what I’m giving myself but if I have the ability to buckle down it should be complete by the end of this weekend. Hardest part will be tearing down the wallpaper border. I have the little machine that does it but it’s all over my head so idk how awkward it will be. Then just patching, sanding, painting, and fixtures or whatnot! Going to paint the mirror frame black and see if I can just salvage that, and I think I’m going to do a little wood crate for toilet paper rather than a holder. And just lay the hand towel on the top of the crate all fancy. Just not enough room for all that clutter in there imo. The next person can put in what they like. So I really just need to find and install a new light fixture and outlets. I can probably do that. ![]()

Befores:
I hate brown.
With you there. Good luck this weekend!
What can brown do for you?
I generally dislike brown paint as well. My parents painted my old room in brown paint when I moved out, so that may be relevant.
How now brown cow
It’s just, it’s an open floorplan house, with huge windows, a two-story great room, and you paint the smallest rooms in the house dark brown. Wtf goes through someone’s mind to paint a 5x5 (maybe) windowless room dark chocolate brown? And then fill it with shelves, a towel rack, a huge mirror, another towel rack, a tp holder that literally touches your leg when you sit down, a shelf over the sink, and an oversized (for the room) light fixture? I’m not claustrophobic at all and the place was confining to me.
Wallpaper down, now time to clean and repair the walls. Apparently 20yrs ago we just papered on anything, even really crappy paint. So, yeah peeled some of that paint right off with the paper.
Any interesting wallpaper? We found some interesting stuff in the kitchen we think might have been a 70s or at least 70s inspired pattern. Not sure the design term, but I think it was a pattern with text in multiple fonts and similar. We only saw a bit around an electrical outlet where it had been covered with more traditional paint.
Some friends bought a house that hadn’t had much work done since the 60s or 70s, and one bedroom had textured, metallic, faux-Asian designed wallpaper in it.That had to go.
We’re not even done the Kitchen, and I’m throwing around ideas to re-do a master closet.
I think if we go slow my wife and I could do paint, floor, and a basic organizer system by ourselves without requiring a contractor get involved.
We should be doing electrical in the kitchen, then next week we get the countertops done, and finally some tile and finishing stuff.
No, just one boring border with like airplane or something on it. They were all Mediterranean or something when they did this place. Hate it.
We had one room that was obviously a kid’s room at some point that I think had the ugly border, too.
It’s now the squirrel room, with tasteful silhouettes of tree limbs and squirrels on the walls. And it is full of our excess junk.
