Random Musings (and associated non sequiturs) v. 3.0

SEriously, I lived there three years and still couldn’t pronounce half the town names. I could cuss pretty decently in pidgin though.

If Stacey makes you think of Stacey Keach’s ass-kicking cop persona, or Kelly reminds you of a war movie hero, then you’re probably not a millenial. I couldn’t figure out how to end that, but those are non-girly things that come to mind

This guys seems to have a handle on it.

I hate confrontations…

Same here.

Ok, I’ve seen F-16s launch drone clouds that autonomously collect data and flock to targets.
And the Army is calling for artillery shells that drop kamikaze drones onto armored targets.

Now we have this.

Combine the three and you have a B52 flying along dropping sensor packets that can loiter for upwards of an hour, that can move rapidly from location to location. Defending itself from ground attacks with laser pods, possibly aided by targeting drones previously dropped off. Dropping munitions filled with suicide drones.

It’s very possible that tank power is on the downswing again soon. At least temporarily. Too big and too slow to deal with this crap. This is almost as bad for armored vehicles as Thor would be, the smart crowbar dropped from space idea. Hell, this could make simply concentrating too many troops in one area a very bad thing. Bombs aren’t that accurate, and the accurate ones are so expensive that it’s not practical to bomb generic troops with them. But a drone with a willie pete payload, or frag, with a raspberry pi to identify troop concentrations, or foxholes, or dining facilities. Dropped from a plane so high it might as well be on another planet to someone on the ground. Wielding lasers that can drop or spoof missiles off target.

Trench warfare was already dead ages ago, but this could be the death knell for any kind of static force. If you aren’t moving you are dead. We’re reaching a stage where armies that don’t keep up technologically are worse off than the Polish on their horses fighting German tanks. Where a infantry squad has more firepower on call than a company or battalion now does. Find the enemy, and if he’s not on the same tech base, call in some drones via arty or drop and just clear them out. I’m sure it’s not that simple, but it’s reaching the levels of magic to someone with an AK and a mission from God already, I can’t imagine 10 years from now.

We need to get the fusion-electric-powered, air-cushion-drive, iridium-armored, powergun-armed tanks online before we can take back the ground battle.

I know I’m six months late to the party, but that was a pretty good book.

I used to joke about wishing to have the power to decide who lives and who dies.

I have input on the process now.

I don’t want it any more.

You know your nerf wars have got out of hand when your co-workers wear safety goggles at their computers

Scary thought, knowing that traditional warfare is almost relegated to the dust of history.

But then again, guerilla tactics may flourish…

Not if I can pair a hunter killer drone with an explosives sniffer.

This assumes someone out there decides we’re back to WWII thoughts about civilian casualties.

Warfare has been evolving for centuries.

If I ever meet @Woodman in real life, I’m likely to at some point call him “Woody”.
Now that I’ve said it, it probably won’t happen, but I had to get it off my chest / out of my head.

Please don’t. That’s my dad.

I was going to do a manicure for my daughter today. I bought some nail polish and some clippers and a few emery boards… I’m now watching a video on it, and there is all kinds of stuff I’m missing… cuticle cream, hand soak, cuticle clippers, wtf…

I was going to use some warm water, soak her hands and clean her nails up and paint them… not all this stuff.

I need a tutorial that starts at a lower level than this. And I’m not even halfway through the video.

Why is it that you never see women giving up their seats for men?

I’ll give up my seat for anyone who is infirm (male or female), carrying a child or with a pushchair (male or female), or pregnant (yep, male or female).

I’ve never seen a woman do the same thing.

When I was on crutches (a couple of years ago) the only way I’d ever get a seat was if there was a schoolkid or a polite guy sitting down.

I’ve given my seat up…

That doesn’t surprise me. For you in particular, but also most people on this forum.
By and large the people who frequent this forum are good people who actually think about things. Sometimes they think differently to me, but I’m happy with that if it’s still thinking

I was going to say, I’ve given mine up too. In fact, in most cases I just stay standing, even if there is a seat. I also try not to take the close parking spots because sometimes people who ought to have handicapped cards don’t, or forget them, so that way they can still have a close spot. I got legs that work… People like my parents and grandma, not so much…
