Random Musings (and associated non sequiturs) v. 3.0

Rebuild gearbox will be back tomorrow.

Now comes the issue of finding the money for the repairs.

Do they take nuts, kidneys and legs as payment?

Not sure if this belongs here or in the Things That Suck thread. @RRabbit42 posted about the eight girls who killed a man in Toronto on the RIP thread. I work in Toronto and, when I need to be in the office, often commute into the station mentioned in the story. I know the intersection it happened at - University and York - well; heck I’ve walked through it many, many times. I may have even walked past the victim before. The thing is, we’re not talking about a sketchy neighbourhood here. It’s a vibrant area with lots restaurants and one of the oldest and, arguably, poshest hotels right at that intersection. And that makes me wonder if that’s part of the reason this is getting so much more press - especially international press - than if it had happened in one of the “bad” neighbourhoods like Jane and Finch. I know that the age of the girls and the senselessness of the crime is a factor but, still, I look at the coverage of murders in other areas versus the coverage of this one, and I wonder.

TikTok announced they would provide support for videos in landscape mode instead of just portrait. Whether that’s because they’re trying to be the next YouTube as said on a Linus Tech Tips clip, I don’t know. But at least it means people won’t have go to back to the pan-and-scan and letterbox methods when trying to create their videos or adding an existing video to their own.

You can see an example of a TikTok video on YouTube that could have benefited from pan-and-scan in Seth MacFarlane talking about Star Trek: The Next Generation. It’s really noticeable starting half-way through it. Two-thirds of Picard is missing.

Being required to stand close together was something the cast of TNG had to unlearn after the series was done. The director of their first movie had to remind them that they had room to spread out.

Two of the biggest advocates of helping home audiences to see the benefit of widescreen movies were Roger Ebert and Steven Spielberg. Links to good articles on what they said back then are below. When the cost of widescreen TVs started dropping, then people started seeing that trying to force a movie to fit a 4:3 ratio wasn’t worth it any more.

Two decades after that’s settled, along comes TikTok with its portrait mode-only format and people start having to figure out what to do with the empty space on the left and right when we look at it on our monitors and TVs. Leave it white, as YouTube does? Put black bands on the sides? Put a duplicate of the video that’s split onto the left and right sides with the duplicate blurred to be less noticeable?

We’ll have to wait to see how this, ahem, pans out.

I had my first encounter with Windows S Mode this week. It’s kind of Apple’s iTunes mentality of “You can’t do anything unless you get it from the Microsoft Store”.

Probably great from a security standpoint but really annoying if the guy who has the administrator password isn’t available.

So typical Enterprise lockdown, but most places disable the “main” store anyway?

I have seen way too many commercial lately. I recognized the Lunchables “Trojan pretzel horse” commercial just by the pause at the beginning while walking by the TV.

And when the Froot Loops commercial came on where the kid wonders where they come from, my thought was, “Well, when a mommy Froot Loop and a daddy Froot Loop love each other very much…”

 If it was true, then they’ll just keep on procreating.

Thoughts to ponder on, following that statement :

  • What do Froot Loops eat and drink in order to sustain themselves?
  • At what rate will they reproduce? Geometrically? Tribble-ically? Logarithmically?
  • Will their colors remain the same, or will the colors start to become more mixed?
  • What will happen if they reproduce and the packages burst open in shop aisles? Will we get an IRL review of Nicholas Fisk’s Trillions?
  • Will they solve the food crisis problem?

Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy strikes again. Now I’m envisioning Froot Loops that want to be eaten and are capable of definitively stating so.

Froot Loops are just Pride Cheerios.

I’m waiting for the first novel/news story/cop show to feature some dumb would-be murderer who puts someone in their car in the garage and turns on the engine … then realizes that it’s an EV.

Barroons belongs on Barsoom.

Holy shit! That EV exhaust thing just happened on episode 3 of Poker Face!
Unbelievable.

If only I could get my hands on the Infinity Stones and Gauntlet, I would very much like to return the entire world to a saner 1980’s without all of today’s kacke.

Well, in some ways assuming I would die in a nuclear wasteland is a bit comforting compared to some of this shit.

Someone left me a present. It was done sometime between 6 PM last night and 5 AM this morning.

You know it’s cold when you can hear the deer complain as they walk by.

Hope thats not a creepy gift…

It turns out that the kid was shoveling snow (at midnight) and was feeling industrious and started to sculpt his snowpile.
