I haven’t heard anyone even bring up what the repercussions might be if you disobey the RTW order.
Rules without defined punishments are just suggestions.
Yup, this is what happened at our company. We let go of an entire floor - which makes sense as our office is in the prime downtown Toronto area so we’re probably paying a fortune - and took away 95% of people’s desks. There is literally not enough room if they tried to force people back full time.
This. I think I’m one of the few people who actually does two days in the office. Most of my team comes in on Tuesdays - our designated “in office” day but doesn’t bother coming in one of the other days, which is what they’re supposed to do. I know several people who don’t come in at all, and haven’t since last year. There are no consequences. It’s supposed to be up to the managers to ensure compliance, but my manager is one of the worst for not coming in.
When she does, she shows up at 10ish and leaves at 2:30ish (she does do a lot of work once she gets home, but still…)
Super cold snap. -2 to -28 in less than a day.
One of our radiators stopped working last night.
All the rest of them are fine. This makes me extremely nervous. If the pipes froze, then they may burst when they thaw and the house will flood inside the walls. I’m not ready for this. I have some idea of what to do to mitigate the damage when that happens, but it’s going to be fucking expensive.
Okay, the radiator came back on last night. We were going to call our heating team about it this morning, so maybe not.
Something that sucks … something that sucks … there has to be … oh, of course.
They’ve monkeyed around with the internet permissions at work. I can visit Reddit, but I can’t post. I can’t even get to Discord. I can’t save anything to SketchUp, but I can open an existing file or create a new one. There is no more sync for Firefox. I still have all my old bookmarks, but they won’t update with new info, like for the changes I made to this website’s link. I’ll just email myself the HTML file of my FF bookmarks once I get home.
His name is Mr Murphy, and he’s a real bastard.
Death.
My boss’ wife has MS and has been a state of decline for a number of years. Her condition is extremely poor and she is not happy. He told a couple of us today that she has contacted the proper authorities (with his help and knowledge) to end her life. This is a law that has been in effect for the last 2 years to respect end-of-life care for Canadian citizens.
Her quality of life is pretty low. I won’t get into the specifics. She is able to make this decision for herself and her family and I think it is extremely brave. I won’t say it’s selfless, because she’s never done anything selfless that I’ve known about. However, it will put an end to a lot more than her own suffering.
Whew. That was a hard meeting. It was our weekly shoot the shit Teams call. Only 3 of us were on, and we’ve grown close over the years. I’m glad that he told us. We know how to support him in this. He is usually there for us in any way we need. Now, we can give him our support.
I’m hoping it’s just the cold and nothing to worry about going forward. There is a problem with our car stereo that has been developing all winter. I have a 64 GB USB stick installed with a lot of music on it. Well, as much music as the system can handle (approaching 6000 songs).
Usually, when you start the car it will remember where you were in the playlist and continue from there. It’s become kind of comical though, starting the car and 10CC’s Rubber Bullets comes on. It’s the first song on the first album, alphabetically. Then, we find something else to listen to. Once in a while, it’ll remember, but other times it’ll remember from a different day or a previous time that it remembered. ???
I’ve checked it out online and this seems to be a known issue that happens with this car and there doesn’t seem to be a fix. Nobody has tied it to the temperature. I’m hopeful that’s what it is. It wasn’t a problem the first few years.
Maybe I’ll try another USB key to see if that’s the issue.
My one hearing aid is starting to act up.
I do hope the repairs will not be too expensive as we are struggling financially.
Computers are so complicated.
I’m still trying to put this NAS together and ran into a snag. That POWER LED lead needs to be only 2 pins wide. Grrrrr. Now, I need to go find another header cable or see if I can get a different wire connector installed.

Hearing aid fixed. R4100
Car battery packed up just after. R1200
Meh.
Easy fix.
Remove a wire by lifting the little plastic flap that’s keeping the connector in the black plastic block. Use a pair of side-cutters to remove the square tube you just removed the wire from, then a knife or file to smooth the plastic down. Insert wire into remaining hole in plastic plug, connect to relevant pins on motherboard.
Netflix will stop shipping DVDs and Blu-ray discs on Friday, September 29, 2023. I just deleted everything in the Saved area of my queue because now they’ll never get them, and I trimmed down the discs in the main part of my queue.
They used to have a distribution center near where I live so the turnaround time was great. That closed during the pandemic and now it’s taking up to two weeks to get another disc if I send it back the next day. There’s only 23 weeks until they don’t do it no more.
Oil leak on crankshaft oil seal next to belt pulley.
Man, this sucks.
Gotta arrange for repairs.
We just had to replace the manifold and exhaust pipe on one of ours. ![]()
Car booked for Thursday. Gotta arrange for alternative transport for that day.
Better get it properly done than damaging the engine and it costs more, as I Do Cars on youtube can attest to.
Accidentally severing my phone’s display cable whilst removing the screen so I can replace the faulty charging port. On a Saturday, when all the parts shops are closed (and they’re not open on Sundays, either).
To make life more interesting, I need my phone for work on Monday because I need MFA to login to the laptop, and then MFA for the VPN, and then MFA for access to everything I need to do my job.

Town inspector and two other town employees blocked me in my driveway Thursday morning on my way to work. Dude didn’t come closer than 10 feet and informed me the town manager wanted to talk to me about my bees. One of my neighbors has a pool and they have video of my bees going to their pool cover. Removing their ability to use their pool, in May, in Indiana, with the cover on it.
I was also informed that “children are being hurt”, “You see where this puts the town right?” And that he hit the pool cover and at least 50 bees went flying. The town is willing to loan me land to put my bees on west of town.
I prefer flight usually, but with three people in my driveway and two town trucks in the road blocking it I was pushed into fight. The state has a law that prohibits towns from prohibiting beehives on private property. They are claiming that they are a public nuisance, but in recent lawsuits that has not been a successful tactic. The hives have to be abandoned or mismanaged to be classified as such. In addition this is the first time they have detailed the complaints to me, last year it was “Bees are scary and some people have been stung.” This gave me no real chance to correct the issue if correctable. The neighbor in question also cut down trees on my side of the fence last year, removing a blocking wall between my property and his. Also, this is usually a very temporary situation in the Spring as they settle down more in the Summer and his pool cover would be off.
OTOH, I do have one hive that is a bit over zealous, and I am moving them to a better position, this is the hive that is hitting his pool, and that wouldn’t have bothered if I still had trees over there. If they had approached me with specific concerns at the time I could have responded with specific solutions, instead this heavy handed bullshit has me getting my feet set. And while I will continue to work on calming that hive down and moving it to a better location, I am not pleased by any of this shit.
It appears they want to bully me into cooperating without paperwork because;
A) No written communication of any kind until I responded this morning via email.
B) I know a couple people on the board that made the ordinance and they have no idea how he thinks he can do this.
C) This dude has a history going back 10-15 years of complaining about the property I live on. (His back yard Ts into the side of my back yard, I have almost an acre, he has like 300 sq feet)
4) The intimidation tactic of having them block my driveway and send 3 or 4 people seems designed to make me lose my cool. And if I lose my cool, I lose.
V) The guy mentions slapping the tarp and bees going flying, from his own mouth he indicates there is no danger. If it was dangerous wouldn’t that have gotten him stung?
F) The guy sent to me is the town building inspector, apparently the managers heavy. Doesn’t have much to do so he gets used to give messages.
Also, I need to work on situational awareness when I am mad. I didn’t know the other two were there till I said something and I have some issues remembering exactly what was said. The whole thing seemed designed to piss me off. I have been keeping this quiet so far, but as soon as he pushes harder I start telling all my clients that I am getting steamrolled. A not insignificant percentage of the town buys my honey, I’m not good at this game, but I am sure one of them are.
TLDR, ex State Rep town manager wants my neighbor to stop complaining so he leaned on me and I am pushing back.
Start recording any interactions you have with them or your neighbour. Make them aware you are recording for your own safety, so you have a record of what was said and what was agreed to (or not).
Were those trees on your property or just on your side but on his property? Because tree law is very lucrative. And I don’t understand the part about people getting hurt; is someone allergic to their stings and it’s causing them distress having them near? Or are people saying they are getting stung and it is somehow your bees they have tracked down by what - bee DNA? Good luck - these people sound nuts…
Isn’t that also breaking a law or constitutional right?
edit : what @TechnoMistress said - get a couple of CCTV cameras which can record sound and good quality footage, and hide these on your property where they will not be easily seen, but from where they can cover a lot of your property without infringing on other’s privacy.
Is a bodycam an option?
We also do have bees, but they don’t bother anybody unless you FAFO.
