Things that suck

My daughter has been suffering from ulcerative colitis for the last 4 years or so. Things have been gradually getting worse over that time.
A week ago things got bad enough that she had to be hospitalised (this is the second time she has had to be hospitalised). She was put on massive doses of steroids to try and bring it under control. That didn’t work so the decision was made that her colon would have to be removed.
That operation happened on Wednesday.
The operation was successful, but there were complications that mean she needs to stay in hospital a bit longer than hoped - at least until next Wednesday, possibly longer still.

My wife has been with my daughter all this week; I’m going to be with her next week and will be bringing her home when they release her.

I know it’s completely irrational, but I feel a lot of guilt about this because she inherited the colitis from me (I have a different autoimmune disease). I’ve told myself all the arguments about why I shouldn’t feel guilty, but it’s still there  . I can’t say that to her of course, so I’m just venting here.

Give her my best wishes! I enjoyed talking to her, and I hope she gets out of the hospital soon.

I did not just spend hours building an index on a 300 page document and realize that I left out a page long chart from the middle. (I have no indexing software, this was strictly by hand.)

Welp on top of being diabetic, having an anxiety disorder, i have been diagnosed with ADHD with inattentive disorder.

Time to make some serious lifestyle changes. Diet and exercise aren’t a miracle cure, but they sure help.

Localized power failure. Meh.

My 7mo son won’t sleep longer than three hours before waking up screaming. Wife and I don’t think it’s anything serious seeing as his latest check-up was all positive stuff. It’s making my wife grumpy which in turn makes me grumpy. At least our 3.5yo has no problems sleeping through the night, provided he gets a nap during the afternoon.

You know, I feel the same.
Both.
At different times.

I feel like an idiot. I spent the morning moving my office back downstairs out of the livingroom now that summer is coming on and it’ll be a livable temperature down there again. I plugged everything back together and the KVM didn’t seem to be working. I tried everything to get it to work, but it just didn’t. I then ordered a different one online and was prepared to wait a week to get it.
I had it double-sided-taped down to my monitor base, and when I pried it off I found out that I had the inputs in the wrong spots.
DUH!
I had tried everything except reading the back to see where the plugs should actually go. I debugged the different cable configurations, checked that each laptop would work independently of the switch with the monitor, etc.
The problem was me.
Literal PEBCAK.
I’ve cancelled the order successfully and am back to work.
Yay.
It’s still a bit cold down here, but I’ll get through it. My partner has made me 3 pairs of flannel house pants, so I’m set.

Don’t worry, we all have our brainfart moments

You are not alone.

My phone is buggered.
I have an Android and use a program called Nova Launcher as the home screen replacement and it works really well with all sorts of nifty settings to customize the interface.
Yesterday, I changed a setting that has made the phone unusable. I turned on something that is supposed to save battery by turning off half of the pixels. Sounds great. As soon as I enabled it, the phone went nuts and I have no way to access the screen. It just starts random applications and hitting random stuff.
Now, I can’t start even start the phone because I can’t enter a password. I’m surprised I was able to turn it off. It took a while.
Originally, I had loaded TWRP on it at the base level so I could root it and install an English ROM to save me from the Chinese interface. It was a bit tricky, but eventually I got it to work. The phone has been great ever since. Rebooting with the down volume + power button combo used to bring me to that interface. Now, it doesn’t. I don’t know why. It did last week.
So, time to start fresh with the Android Dev Kit and load in a new ROM. Oh, I see that there is one out for Android 11. Great.
Except that I didn’t turn on the developer option for USB debugging on the phone and now I have no way to enable it.
TLDR: Phone no workee. Can’t get into it via PC. Argh.

I’ve been thinking that maybe if I could get a secondary touch screen and run that through the USB-C port, I might be able to reset that option that way. I just happen to have an extra touch screen that I got for another project. Now I just have to see if I can find a USB-C to HDMI cable or something.

I still have my work phone, so I am still kind of reachable to those who need me. I suppose I should change my voice mail and see if there’s a way to access my text messages.

I’m getting an absolutely huge backpay settlement next week, so I could just buy a new phone … but I really love my Mi Max 3. There is nothing wrong with it and if I can update it to 11, it should last for a couple more years. I love my big-ass phone.

Why not ask in r/xiaomi for advice? Chances are somebody had the same issue and got it resolved.

So sorry to hear about that. Hope you can get it fixed.

edit : Xiaomi fanboy myself. Have the Note 8.

Saw your post on Reddit.

I’m wondering now - do you have Find My Phone enabled?

Can you use that to wipe your phone remotely? Once that is done, you should have access to it - but without all the apps and stuff installed.

edit : now you know me and I know you on Reddit.

And here I thought I was going to go for a smaller phone, but with old age a bigger screen (and bigger font) is a big plus.

Yeah, thanks. I’m going to give that a try later. Sounds promising. I have to remember to remove the SD card first, just in case.
Can’t do it from the phone.
Can’t do it from a plugged in PC.
Can probably do it from the cloud based OS system.

YAY! It worked! Thanks, @Ook . Now that I’m at this stage, I guess it’s time to try to install that Android 11 ROM.

I’m so glad to hear that. Was a stab in the dark.

Guess desperate times call for desperate measures.

I still have to set up find my phone on my Redmi device…

It’s part of your google account. If you have an Android phone, that’s part of it.

Oh yeah, I forgot about that.

Old age and all that.

Brain scan tomorrow. That’s fine. My partner wants to see if my tiny amount of memory loss is explainable.
The thing that sucks is that it’s scheduled for 6am, sign-in at 5:30.

Good luck. Don’t forget to wave your hat.
