I swear the next person who comes in and have a query about this idiotic crisis we’re havening right now will get the cold shoulder from me… I’m on my lunch break FFS
Meh. Idiots. Idiots everywhere.
Meh.
My office is a mess because I do a lot of work daily and I need to cram all the junk needed for it in my small space. You, on the other hand, do much less work daily and don’t want to put the needed junk in your much larger office. Let me know when you combine two and two together. Otherwise, f%ck off and let me work.
If you are having an emergency, I will help you. If someone is dead, in the hospital or in jail, that constitutes an emergency. Anything less is merely a problem. Those I expect you to solve on your own.
I just went back through the whole thread. Man, I was way crankier at my previous job.
Whose numbnuts idea is it now to take old PC’s (XP-era PC with 256Mb RAM), install Ubuntu on these and use these for work stations?
There is a reason those wankstations have been decommissioned.
- IDE.
- DDR RAM
- Outlived its lifetime.
Dolts.
Where you gonna get 2Gb DDR RAM and a 500Gb IDE HDD?
Ha! Numbnuts!
Contract states very specifically “3 year next business day maintenance plan”
So I can foretell that somebody WILL get a shedload of brown stuff coming their way should those wankstations do a titsup.com…
And no, I will NOT support these PC’s either. Get your own staff.
Recycling them for “thin” clients using Remote-X11, RDP or VNC makes a bit of sense.
But as a work station? That’s a very “interesting” decision.
Sent off a missive to whoever it was to see if they can procure RAM and hard drives… two PC’s don’t have any RAM at all, and a third have 256Mb installed.
Going to be intradesting. DDR-400MHz RAM… and IDE HDD’s…
I would predict that there will be much whining about how slow “the network” is on those workstations, but that’s pretty much a given in the circumstances.
And any prediction on who the lusers (and the numbnuts) will blame, unfortunately.
The irony being that “the network” is likely the fastest component in the machine.
But it is always the network’s fault. Even when the printerer is not connected to the network (and, coincidentally enough, the workstation - “oh, was that cable important?”), it must be the network’s fault.
Or the IT department, depending on how much knowledge the lusers lack.
You say that like they understand the difference between the network and the IT department.
I used to deal with cellphone customers who assumed that I (in customer service) was also the only person in the Northern Hemisphere in control of every cell tower and switching station in existence.
And at the bank call center, I was personally responsible for every Direct Deposit that was not credited to the account three days early. Including, on three occasions, I believe, accounts at other banks.
One or two do. Which is why I said depending on how much knowledge they lack ![]()
The move to the new version of our SSO software went off without a hitch!
The 800-lb gorilla customer had no problems with the new server, and we didn’t have to use the rollback plan.
The team wasn’t up until midnight last night.
I was able to sleep in since there weren’t any migrations to hosting services schedule for 0700.
I feel fresh as a daisy!
Why am I setting goals for a 3-6 month contract gig?
Dear $manglement,
Currently, our IT department looks after:
- An AS400
- Around 20 separate Windows-based systems, 15 business-critical
- An IP phone system
- Data transfer between any of these systems
- The virtual infrastructure that said systems run on
- Network infrastructure
- Helpdesk and deskside support
- Mobile phones
along with being expected to be well-versed in just about anything with a circuit board.
Currently, this IT department consists of 2 people. One person looks after the AS400 and reporting plus doing IT management, which leaves li’l old me to do EVERYTHING ELSE so you’ll forgive me when I place your “I can’t get onto $parent_company_service” request in the pile with all the other things with care factor equalling zero, especially when the procedure has not changed since I walked you through it the last three times.

Okay, you’ve taken a direct copy of a code method and pasted it into another section of the code.
That’s bad.
Probably not the worst thing that you could do, but it’s pretty well up there.
What makes it into a contender for the daily WTF though is that the only place you use one of the methods is in a unit test - where you compare the output of one of the duplicated methods to the output of the other duplicated method.
What were you smoking?
Could you not see how stupid this is?
You don’t even check the contents of the output, just the number of items received. Do you actually understand the point of a unit test? (That’s rhetorical, I already know the answer).
Why would I bother putting the effort in to be moved up to a different department? I already know you guys prefer hiring from outside than improving your existing staff.
