What Made You Happy Today?

It’s Friday. I like Fridays.

One week until vacation. Happy and stressed at the same time. Though vacation also entails attending DH’s graduation from Florida State for his second Master’s in four years. So, yeah, pretty happy that will be over as well. And no PhD so no more school!

Today is the last day for the kitchen remodel.

The incredibly awesome weather will hold out through the weekend. I’m used to sweating just sitting outside right now, and struggling to keep my garden alive. This is awesome!!!

I’m really enjoying our cooler than normal summer so far in Wisconsin. Sure we’re doing less swimming, but mid 70’s and low humidity is my kind of weather. I’ve only had to run the AC a few times this season.

Yesterday morning, I spent an hour learning how to make IED triggers (various types of trip wires and pressure plates) out of cheap household components. The “IEDs” were just lightbulbs; the task was to quickly make the triggers without prematurely “detonating” the bulb.

These are the days that I really like my work.

I wish I could say that about my kitchen remodel. Mine’s been taking far too damn long because the boss keeps pulling the contractors off to send them to other jobs.

(Mind you, the only reason he’s getting away with that is because my mother’s the one paying for the job, and she works for them as a secretary, so it’s viewed as a “low priority”. Meanwhile, I haven’t had a sink nor clean dishes for damn near 2 months now.)

We had a good month of washing dishes in the small bathroom sink. But as of Sat, the sink is working again. We have a temporary island top until I can spruce it up a bit and secure it down and the hose for the dishwasher will be showing up tomorrow. Then we’ll just have a gap where the fridge used to be.

We did get our guys pulled off the job for 2 days to finish up something else, but as they said, they would’ve done the same if we needed them on the job. Good guys though. They did an excellent job even going so far as to wiring up regular electrical boxes for the dishwasher and garbage disposal. Now we don’t have to shut off power to pull them out.

Right now I’ve still got a working fridge, microwave, and stove, but no counters (all ripped out and will eventually get replaced with granite ones), no sink, the dishwasher’s in its spot but not hooked up, and no lights beyond the one in the fridge and the ones on the microwave.

I’m getting sick of take-out.

Buy a 4x4 sheet of plywood, put it on a counter in the evening, use an electric skillet or wok for cooking. Wash dishes in water warmed in the skillet. Dump waste water in toilet, just make sure you get the chunks out.

Or pretend you are camping and prepare and clean up food outside.

The parts of me that were hurting yesterday are not hurting anywhere near as much today. Which is good, except that other parts of me are hurting now.

The joys of taking up a sport that uses muscles you never knew you had…

I completed a project that’s been going on for the last three weeks.

I hadn’t been running or doing much of anything in a week and I didn’t have to be in work as early, so I went for a run this morning. I got out to about my turnaround point (a mile and a half or so) and the thunder started, so I ran faster. Not fast enough because the pouring rain started next. I was utterly soaked when I got home. It was fun.

Spent 2 days (~20 hrs total) at Cedar Point with the in-laws, cousins, and kids. All my kids had a great time, rode tons of rides (although they were too short for a couple of them - maybe next year!) and nobody came home injured! Next up, Florida on Saturday. Ah, vacation…here we come!!

Spending the day at Doran beach. I haven’t been to the beach in many, many years. The weather was beautiful!

Finally took a bunch of stuff taking up space in my garage to the dump. It’s such a little thing, but I am disproportionately happy about it.

I started off planing on cleaning out my garage. Ended up replacing screens in a couple windows and a screen door. So I traded a never ending chore for one I could actually accomplish. Much satisfaction was felt.
