So, the largest offender is China, as usual. The country exports more honey than is physically possible for bees to make considering the size of the country, climate, etc… So the US set a limit on the amount we can import. Instead China sells to Vietnam/Laos/Cambodia/Brazil, and they sell to us. There is a constant arms race on part of the people who try to detect fake honey and those who try to pass it off.

On top of fake honey, most store honey is so processed that it lacks anything but a bit of flavor and color. Super fine filtering removes most of the reason to eat honey, and pasteurizing it does the rest.

Find your personal beekeeper, and even if they don’t raise and harvest all their own honey you can at least trust that if they have to source some it’s also reasonably local and unprocessed. Watch out for places that have honey all over the place, or in grocery stores all over, unless you can pinpoint their apiary it’s likely they are buying in bulk from someone out of state and just bottling.

Wholesale pricing on honey has gone from $2.50 a lb a couple years ago to $3.35 or so lately, in the midwest, and it’s likely to go up another 20 cents or so. If you are paying more than $16 a lb go farther out of town. Best price will be near $12, $10 if they are dumping it. Also, buy from people selling by the pound in honey bottles, not mason jars unless it’s your neighbor or something.

I’m so glad that I have a “honey daddy” who sends me honey from his hives every year. This year he sent me 2 lbs!

The Java GregorianCalendar constructor.

The format of the constructor is

new GregorianCalendar(year, month, dayOfMonth, hour, minute, second);

Except that the month, and only the month is zero based, so Jan is zero, Feb is 1 etc.

I get that a lot of stuff in Java is zero based, but ffs, make it make sense. If you have one thing in a constructor zero based, then all of them should be or none of them

I remember in my very basic VisualBasic 5 course (oh, so many years ago) we were tasked with building a calendar application. I was done way earlier than anyone else, so I added functionality to convert the date to Gregorian. It wasn’t particularly useful, but it got me an A+.

Being told a sibling has a certain health issue, then being told that other siblings might also have same issue. Then seeing that the first sibling definitely has it.

Crud. I have about 15 years before it may show up in me.

You can always hope that it skips you. A lot of things require the genetic predispostion but never develop.

In the meantime, make the best of the next 15 years!

I’m at home, we currently have 4 people watching online videos and I’m getting 170 times that speed (only 50 times the upload speed though).
That’s appalling.

YouTube wouldn’t even entertain the idea that I was connected to the internet.

This is ours. There are current sessions ongoing on it.

Ours is 4Mb down, 2Mb up

No issues with connecting to youtube etc, but downloads are a bit on the slow side, especially should ookville+dog be on the WWW at the same time…

My dogs suck. They have the taste of chicken and have now torn multiple holes in my coop. They don’t even really want to eat them, they are just so much fun to chase. The wonder of mixed breeds.

Dogs. I used to rather like dogs if not love them as much as cats. Now that I’ve moved into an area where people seem to think that it’s perfectly okay to let their dogs run loose and bark all day long, I have begun to actively dislike them.

The dogs that took out my entire pen of growout quail continue to get loose every couple of weeks and come straight here half of the time. I’ve gotten one side of the greenhouse rollup almost covered in hardware cloth so they will be less of a hazard, but dogs are instinct driven to chase poultry.

I mean hell, they run funny, make entertaining noises and have all those feathers to pull, I get it.

They’re like kids. Dogs will be dogs unless the owner takes steps to control their behaviour. I have just found that there are a lot of really irresponsible dog owners up here. The neighbour whose dogs wiped out a bunch of my quail still has one more payment to go before they’ve paid off the damages that their dogs did.

Yeah, we are working with ours on this. I can call one of them off, but the other is hard to get through to when he is chasing one.
